The Law (Law No. 63/2019), which subjects consumer disputes of low economic value to arbitration at the consumer's choice, was published in the Diário da República (Official Gazette) on August 16, 2019, and entered into force on September 15.

"Consumer disputes of low economic value are subject to mandatory arbitration or mediation when, by the express choice of consumers, they are submitted to an arbitral tribunal attached to legally authorized consumer dispute arbitration centers," reads the statute published today in the Diário da República.

The statute defines consumer disputes of low economic value as those whose value does not exceed the monetary jurisdiction limit of first-instance courts, which is €5,000.
